Texas Government Lobby
Capitol Inside is reporting that Texas Democrats may be supporting Mit Romney as the Republican presidential nominee. Mike Hailey notes that this position is the opposite of national Democrat trends. National Democrats are hoping for Santorum or Gingritch, thinking that their more extreme positions will drive moderates to Obama.
But Texas Democrats are hoping a Romney nomination will have a negative effect on Republican turnout in Texas this Fall.
It’s the straight ticket voters the Democrats are thinking of. Those who show up to vote for a Republican presidential candidate that inspires them. Once there they vote a straight ticket. With a Republican presidential candidate’s victory virtually guaranteed in Texas in the modern era, why show up to vote for someone you really don’t like. And Texas Republicans really do not like Mit Romney.
Romney is arguably the least conservative Republican we’ve seen since John McCain. And unlike McCain, Romney doesn’t have a war story to help voters look past his moderate views. This is what Texas Democrats are hoping for.
