United HealthCare Awarded State Contract – February 2012
The contract to manage HealthSelect for Texas has been awarded to United HealthCare, a client of the Texas Lobby Group. The Dallas Morning news reports that UHC will save Texans 41 million dollars a year.
Blue Cross Blue Shield held the Texas held the contract to manage HealthSelect of Texas for over three decades. They are claiming that they loss of their contract was for political reasons. But the Austin American Statesman states that various employee advocate services have examined the contract and say the decision was made for sound fiscal reasons.
UHC will provide access to their healthcare network to Texas state employees.
According to the Austin American Statesman, Derrick Osobase, legislative and political director for the Texas State Employees Union, notes that the ERS always does good background work before awarding state contracts.
